Deep Cove 2012

We had an awesome time at Deep Cove last week.  Highlights for many were getting to see the dolphins while on our cruise, conquering the tramps (especially the Hanging Valley one) and doing a lot of fishing!  Another cool thing was to also stand underneath Helena Falls - not many people get to do that!  Over the next couple of days I'll get the kids to record some of their experiences below.  Check them out and feel free to comment!

  1. My favourite things about camp:
The cruise on Day 3–we seen lots of bottlenose dolphins and 1 baby dolphin.
Seeing Stella, Helena and the Hanging Valley waterfalls- we walked right to the base of Helena Falls, it was so exciting. It was really awesome when we got to the top and seen the waterfalls.
Catching two fish off the wharf with a hand line. (I have no idea what type of fish they were so I throw them back.)
Going on a boat for the 1st time.
    Being with my friends.
The sense of achievement when we reached the top of Hanging Valley and Stella Falls.

  6. WOW the tramps were long but my most favourite parts were fishing, the boat ride to see the dolphins and the last was seeing the wonderful waterfall’s. If I had a pick to take away something it would be the SANDFLYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

i found Stella falls and hanging valley challenging but when you finally get there you are able to put an imaginary flag into the ground and say i have accomplished hanging valley and stella falls walk and you feel so amazing after us.

  9. On the 21st of March everyone got up very early to start the long day of getting to Deep Cove. When we got to Manopouri, we unloaded the bus and put everything on the boat. Then after a 1 hour boat ride we arrived at West Arm. We had a short toilet stop, and then went 200m underground to the power station. Afterwards we went straight to the Deep Cove Hostel and had some lunch. After lunch we went fishing and walked to the amazing waterfall at Helena Falls. We were even lucky enough to stand the waterfall and get soaking wet. Overall day 1 was my favourite days.

  14. I enjoyed going to Helena Falls. I liked going fishing as well. I caught my first fish. It was cool when we reached the top of Hanging Valley. Hanging Valley was my favourite walk (or more like climb). The boat cruise was pretty awesome and I liked seeing the dolphins, up close. The scenery was awesome aswell. I would definately go to Deep Cove again.

  15. The things that were most memorable from camp were definitely climbing up Hanging Valley , having an epic wipe-out competition on the way down and standing directly under Helena Falls on the Helena Falls walk. Even though those things were the most memorable I probably had most fun fishing where I caught over 15 fish and 1 that was big enough to eat, on the last fishing trip our boat caught a foot long red cod and three teraki around the same size.
